Sore, stiff neck and headache?

for a very long time i have had a sore, stiff neck, only recently have i been experiencing headaches and occasional dizziness which i think may have to do with the sore neck, becuase its got a lot worse. if i twist it a certain way, it makes a loud creaking/cracking sound. if i turn it normally, almost any direction, it makes a weird crunching sound. my neck is extremly sore. any ideas what may have caused this? to be honest i have very little belief in chiropractor so im not sure if i should spend the money. i will however make an appointment with my doctor, who i have little belief in either. anything i should mention to him or get him to look at? and tips for relieving the pain? i have tried advil but it dosent help at all. thanks
