I am in a knockdown drag out about a child refusing to eat anything but junk.Can a child starve himself?

I say that a child would not starve themselves and that you should continue to serve them nutritious food and if they don't eat,they don't eat.Eventually,they will.They are telling me that a child WILL starve themselves to death .I just don't see how that is possible.
