What would happen if a state tried to succeed the Union.?

Hypothetically what do you think would happen. Texas has threatened succession pretty recently, so has Montana, Wyoming, and a couple others. Would it be similar to a modern day Civil War when the southern states tried to succeed, or would the federal government let it happen. Maybe use economic sanctions, or what. If states did succeed would they make their own currency?
